Why do I need a subwoofer? Bass is the foundation of sound in many contemporary musical recordings and film soundtracks. From the pounding attack of metal kick drums or the 'doof doof' of dance sub-bass synths, to the dramatic explosions and earthshaking special effects of action movies, it's deep, penetrating bass that gives these sounds their ability to produce powerful emotions; tension, fear, excitement. Therefore, if you don't have at least one dedicated subwoofer in your car or home audio system you are missing out on the fundamental part of the soundscape and so, the audio experience. However, integrating an Affordable Drivers Mach 5 Audio subwoofer into your current sound system will not only allow you to hear the sound around you, but feel it too, and so enjoy a richly enhanced listening experience. Let's face it music and movie sound is, after all, all about feeling. Many people after adding a good quality subwoofer to their system wonder how they ever did without one.
Why do I need an Affordable Drivers Mach 5 Audio subwoofer? Many people ask, 'Aren't good quality subwoofers expensive?' Yes, and no. The car subwoofer market is an extremely competitive one and manufacturers and retailers often invest huge amounts of money in expensive promotional materials and advertising campaigns, such as paying well known celebrities to endorse their products. And who pays for these fancy brochures, adverts and celebrities? You do! Contrastingly, Affordable Drivers and Mach 5 Audio expend very little on advertising or promotion, and rely instead on excellent product performance and word of mouth to do their advertising for them. The benefit? You get the best possible car subwoofer for your money, often rivaling the performance of drivers three times the price. Turning to the home theatre and hi-fi audio market, purchasing ready made home theatre or hi-fi subwoofers of any significant worth can be very expensive, starting around $1000 for a modest unit. Even then, depending upon your application, these units can sometimes disappoint; for example, if they are not powerful enough for the size or material construction (e.g. concrete garages) of your listening area. This is because a significant cost to building a home subwoofer lays in the designing and building of the cabinet. The solution? Build an Affordable Drivers Mach 5 Audio DIY subwoofer! By doing the cabinet designing (or by using a freely available design) and building yourself, you can greatly reduce the cost of obtaining a quality subwoofer that performs superbly. Plus, you get the added satisfaction of knowing you built the unit yourself - there's an old say that goes something like, 'someone who chops their own wood is twice warmed by the fire'.
When is big just not big enough? Over recent years subwoofers have got bigger, 'badder' and cheaper. With the rise in relative strength of the Australian dollar and improvements in manufacturing and design technology, the quality of subwoofer drivers has increased dramatically as costs decrease. With this reduction in cost, coupled with similar reductions in the costs of large video/home theatre screens, has come an increasing demand in higher excursion, larger drivers. Once 12" subwoofers were considered 'large' and 'sufficient' but increasingly (overseas), 15" and 18" subwoofers are now considered the norm. Not so in Australia - until now, these increasingly desirable 15" and 18" subwoofer drivers have remained somewhat unobtainable; either the drivers have simply not been available locally, or if they have been available, prohibitively expensive. Similarly, those looking to import larger drivers found either that shipping charges were prohibitively expensive (often being more than the cost of the drivers themselves!) or if not, that shipping times ran into months instead of days. Therefore, Affordable Drivers (being DIY audio enthusiasts themselves) decided to meet the need of fellow do-it-yourselfers and break the sonic drought. Affordable Drivers, in conjunction with Mach 5 Audio, is proud to usher in a new era for Australian DIY subwoofer builders; affordable, large diameter, high excursion, high performance car subwoofer and home theatre/hi-fi subwoofer drivers. Exciting Infinite Baffle or dual EBS subwoofer installations, or outrageously excessive car audio subwoofer applications, once prohibitively expensive for many now become an affordable reality; there has never been a better time to buy. From all of us at Affordable Drivers, have fun!
Isn't designing subwoofers difficult? Of all audio speaker designs DIY subwoofers are the easiest. Why? Firstly, there is no need to decide upon suitable pairing of tweeter and mid-range speakers. Secondly, there are no crossovers to design or implement (no need for tricky soldering). Thirdly, there are no standing waves to consider when deciding on the dimensions of your enclosure (you only need to consider the total box volume). Fourthly, modern computers and modelling software make prototyping, tweaking and 'testing' your design as simple as pushing a button - before you even starting cutting up materials you can have a excellent idea as to how your Affordable Drivers Mach 5 Audio subwoofer will perform. For example, you can determine your DIY subwoofer's maximum volume over its frequency range with differing amounts of wattage applied while checking you don't exceed the limits of the driver. Best of all, there are a number of first-rate DIY subwoofer design software packages that are available for free (or voluntary donation). Alternatively, you could always follow a pre-existing design, many of which are also freely available over the Internet. Mach 5 Audio is currently developing design & build plans for its entire range, starting with their IXL-18.4 subwoofer driver. These designs will be posted here as soon as they come to hand. For home theatre/hi-fi applications Affordable Drivers and Mach 5 Audio recommend utilization of the ColloPort 6" subwoofer port in your cabinet implementation, which has been specifically designed to be used in conjunction with the IXL-18.4. Fitting the ColloPort 6" into your own 365litre capacity cabinet of choice will allow you to achieve a box tuning of 15hz.
